H.B.P.A - Race Season Announcement

Jean Kruse • March 30, 2020

Dear Horsemen,

While we do not know the full extent of how the current COVID-19 pandemic will affect our 2020 race season, we are committed to making the best choices we can for all of our owners, trainers and backstretch personnel.

The HBPA of Alberta have received written notice from Century Mile Racetrack and Casino with regards to some significant changes to the 2020 Thoroughbred racing season.

The Fall meet at Century Downs scheduled from September 5 – October 25 has been moved in its entirety to Century Mile. This means we will race the entire 2020 season at Century Mile Racetrack and Casino.

We have evaluated all of the information and are trying to remain flexible and adaptable to make the best possible decisions. A delayed start to the summer meet might be necessary, and we feel it is in our best interest to have horses and horsemen stay in one location for the entire race season.

We will continue during these uncertain times to adapt to the changing landscape from the state of emergency in Alberta. And we will continue to make the best possible decisions we can for the horses and horsemen who race in Alberta.

Thank you,

Allen Goodsell

Executive Manager

Champion Sire Counterforce Brings Exciting Breeding Opportunities to Alberta! Congratulations to the connections of Counterforce, who was named Champion Sire in British Columbia for 2025 at last night’s industry awards evening! The son of Smart Strike has built an impressive resume, previously earning Champion BC Sire in 2022, while also being recognized that same year as Champion Freshman Sire in both British Columbia and Canada. Now standing in Alberta for his second season, Alberta breeders are fortunate to have access to this proven sire whose progeny continue to make an impact on the racetrack.
