CTHS (Alberta) 2025-2026 Mare Purchase Program

Intent


This program is designed for purchasers that purchase in foal Thoroughbred mares in foal to a Thoroughbred Stallion through a public auction or digital sale between October 1 2025 and March 31 2026 where the mare is located outside of Alberta at the time of purchase. The mare may leave the province to be bred but must return to Alberta to complete the Alberta Residency requirement. If the mare is bred back to an Alberta stallion, an additional bonus is available.

Verification must be provided via documentation signed by a a designated representative of an Alberta farm where the mare foaled.



Qualification Criteria


 Applicants


● Open to Canadian residents, Canadian corporations, or Canadian partnerships.


● Must be current CTHS full member in good standing.


● Must be the registered Canadian breeders of the foal produced.


● Mares must not be eligible for, or approved under, any other CTHS Alberta sponsorship programs



Requirements


The mare must foal in Alberta in 2026. Verification of foaling location must be provided via documentation signed by a designated representative of an Alberta farm where the mare foaled.


● The mare may leave the province to be bred in 2026 but must return to Alberta and reside in Alberta at the application deadline.


● The mare must not be older than 12 years at the time of purchase.


● Mares must be purchased at a recognized public auction or digital sale between October 1, 2025 and March 31, 2026 where the mare is located outside of Alberta at the time of purchase.


● The purchase must be directly from the sales company, with no third-party ownership transfers, except when the purchase is through a formally appointed agent.


● If the mare loses her foal but was confirmed in foal at the time of purchase, eligibility remains if the mare is rebred to an Alberta sire.


Proof of service to a Thoroughbred stallion during the 2026 breeding season must be provided. An additional bonus is available if bred back to an Alberta stallion



Purchase Requirements


Minimum Purchase Price: 


$5,000 USD or $7,000 CDN.

For purchases made in US funds, the conversion rate applied will be the rate on the day of the purchase. The converted amount in Canadian dollars will be the basis for program payouts. All payments from the program will be issued in Canadian dollars


 

Reimbursement:


  • 40% of the hammer price paid, up to a maximum of $5,000 CAD.


  • If bred back to an Alberta-based stallion in the 2026 breeding season, applicants will receive an additional $1,500 CAD. 


Documentation: 


  • Sales company Bill of Sale (showing purchase at a recognized public auction or digital sale where the mare is located outside of Alberta at the time of purchase).


  • Proof of foaling in Alberta – verification signed by a a designated representative of an Alberta farm where the mare foaled.


  • Agent authorization – if an agent is used, proof of their formal appointment prior to the purchase is required.


  • Veterinary certificate – required if the mare loses her foal.


  • Proof of 2026 service – signed by the stallion owner or syndicate manager.



Deadline


August 1, 2026


Limit:


A maximum of 2 applications per entity. If oversubscribed, priority will be given to the first application per entity before considering a second.

Applications will be reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis, first applications will be given priority over any second applications

The CTHS (Alberta Division) reserves the right to limit this program to to a payout of $75,000 subject to CTHS Board Approval., If a program is undersubscribed, any unused funds may be redirected to the Breeders' Bonus or other CTHS programs, or redistributed to eligible breeders. The CTHS also reserves the right to inspect all records, breeding documents, veterinary certificates, and other related materials to verify eligibility. Participants agree to provide such documents upon request. Non-compliance with verification requests may result in disqualification from the program.


Program Application Review Process:


All applications will be reviewed by a three-person CTHS (Alberta) Board Committee after each program deadline. It is the applicants’ responsibility to ensure that applications are completed accurately and that all required supporting documentation is submitted with the application. Failure to provide the necessary documentation or proof of current CTHS membership may result in the rejection of the application.


Applications will be assessed by the Committee to confirm that the submitted Thoroughbred mares meet the criteria for the respective program. The Committee reserves the right to transfer an application to a different program if the mare is deemed to be ineligible for the program originally applied for.


The Committee will recommend eligible applications to the CTHS (Alberta) Board of Directors for final approval and payout. Applicants whose submissions are unsuccessful will receive feedback explaining the reasons for rejection.
