In partnership with Horse Racing Alberta, offering targeted grants to encourage the breeding, foaling, purchase, and training of high-quality Thoroughbreds.

Mare & Recruitment Incentives: August 1st Deadline

2026–2027 Maiden and Open Mare Program

  • Incentive: $2,500 for mares bred to an Alberta stallion; $1,500 for mares bred to an out-of-province stallion.
  • Perk: Resulting yearlings get free entry into the 2028 Alberta Sale.
  • Limit: Maximum of 30 mares total; cap of 2 mares per member.

2025–2026 Mare Purchase Program

  • Incentive: 40% rebate on public auction hammer prices outside Alberta (minimum purchase $5,000 USD / $7,000 CAD) up to a $5,000 maximum. Additional $1,500 bonus if bred back to an Alberta sire.

Foal Registrations & Growth: December 1st Deadline

2026 Foal in Alberta Program

  • Incentive: Funding paid upon proof of registration with the Jockey Club and CTHS National office.
  • ⚠️ CRITICAL NOTICE: To secure standard funding and avoid severe late submission penalties, completed application forms along with copies of official Jockey Club and Canadian Registration certificates must be in the CTHS office by December 1st of the foaling year.

Racing Performance & Stallions: No Application Required.

Two-Year-Old Development Program

  • Incentive: $1,500 bonus paid out automatically to the owners of registered Alberta-bred starters making their first career start on an official Alberta racetrack. Limited to the first 35 qualifying starters of the season.

Stallion Owner Bonus Program

  • Incentive: Substantial direct financial payouts distributed annually to stallion managers based on the cumulative racetrack earnings of their stallion's Alberta-sired progeny.

Horse Racing Alberta Boosts Breed Improvement Programs for 2025 As we approach the end of a successful 2024, Horse Racing Alberta (HRA) is gearing up for even greater success in 2025 with significant enhancements to its Breed Improvement Programs (BIP). The programs, which have already paid out substantial bonuses to breeders and owners, are set for an impressive expansion, reflecting HRA’s commitment to fostering a robust horse racing industry in Alberta.

CTHS (Alberta Division) 2025 Foal Incentive Maiden and Open Mare Program This program is for Maiden and Open Mares bred in 2024 for foals of 2025. Current CTHS (AB) Full Members with registered Thoroughbred mares that have not foaled in either 2023 and/or 2024 will be eligible for funding of $2,500 if sired by a Thoroughbred stallion standing in Alberta and $1,500 if sired by an out of province Thoroughbred stallion. The breeder of the resulting Alberta bred foal will be paid upon proof of registration of the Alberta bred foal with The Jockey Club and CTHS National office. Deadline for submitting copies of the completed foal registration certificates (Jockey Club and Canadian) is December 1, 2025.

Two new incentive programs were introduced for 2023 – 2024; the Maiden Mare & Open Mare Breeding Incentive Program and the New Mare Recruitment Program. The Maiden Mare and Open Mare Breeding Incentive Program was established with the purpose of bringing new or out of production Thoroughbred mares into production in Alberta. This program was highly successful with 75 approved applications.

New Mare Recruitment Program (NMRP) 2023 - 2024 Deadline: September 1st, 2023 Breeders with in-foal mares that have not foaled in Alberta in 2021 and 2022 will be eligible for $5,000. A payment of $3,000 will be paid upon delivering a live 2023 foal in Alberta with the submission of a Jockey Club Live Foal Report and a Breeder Declaration. Should that same mare produce an Alberta bred and sired live foal in 2024, the breeder will be eligible for a further $2,000 in 2024 with the submission of a Jockey Club Live Foal Report and a Breeder Declaration. NOTE: Mares that are eligible for the H.B.P.A. 2023 Mare Incentive Purchase Program will not be eligible. Breeders must be Full Members in good standing of the CTHS to qualify. Non-residents of Alberta are welcome to apply.
