Western Canadian Derby Series Returns with some additional incentives

Media Release (PDF)

Joining forces once again, Assiniboia Downs, Century Mile, and Hastings Racecourse are set to deliver another

powerhouse racing program with their combined Derby series during the 2024 racing season.

The second year of the newly named Western Canadian Derby Series comprises the prestigious $125,000 Manitoba

Derby, scheduled for August 5 at Assiniboia Downs in Winnipeg, Manitoba; the renowned $200,000 G3 Canadian

Derby at Century Mile in Edmonton, Alberta on August 24; and the highly anticipated $125,000 G3 BC Derby at

Hastings Racecourse in Vancouver, British Columbia on September 14.

The series will offer a $100,000 bonus for the horse that is able to win all three races. While this would be a

remarkable feat, it is quite possible with the timing of the scheduled events, making it a great opportunity for those

who have a talented 3 year old.

In addition, this year there will be a points system introduced to the program that will provide $25,000 in bonuses to

the owners and trainers that have competed in at least two of the three events. Points will be awarded based on

their race finish in each of the legs and will also have points awarded for owners and trainers that run in all three

races. Details will be published shortly.

Darren Dunn, CEO of Assiniboia Downs commented, “ASD is so pleased to continue to work with our western partner

racetracks on this exciting and rewarding Derby series. This year’s rendition has been bolstered by additional reward

money targeted at participation and excellence in results and should only lead to larger fields, increased wagering

and an elevated experience for all of our customers.”

"Whenever you can get multiple racing jurisdictions working together to promote horse racing, you can't lose”,

exclaimed Allen Goodsell, Racing Manager at Century Casinos. “We are excited for the new changes to the Western

Canadian Derby Series that put more money into racing participants' pockets."

“We are really excited about the prospect of hosting the winner of all three legs,” exclaimed Dawn Lupul, Manager of

Racing and Communications for BC. “The introduction of the additional $25,000 in bonuses for owners and trainers

will provide even more of an incentive to participate in the entire series, adding to the success of our inaugural

season last year. We’ll be getting the cheques ready!”

n Memory of Golden Made (1998 - 2025) Today, we say goodbye to Golden Made, whose beauty, kindness and spirit made her a favourite for everyone on the farm. Golden Made earned over $372,000 on the track with 11 wins from ages 2 to 5, but her greatest gift to us was in the breeding shed: 12 foals, 12 to race, 12 to win. She was perfect. Highfield Stock Farm was fortunate to purchase Golden Made at the Keeneland January Sale in 2007, and she has been a cherished part of our broodmare band ever since.

The Princess of the Track is now Queen of the Hill. Absolutely marvelous, Big Hug was named Alberta’s Horse Of the Year Saturday at the annual Night of Champions Awards dinner at Century Mile. Also named Alberta’s 2024 Champion Older Mare and Champion Alberta-bred, Big Hug won six of her eight starts in Alberta last year capturing the Founders Distaff, CTHS Sales stake, the Fall Classic Distaff and the R.K. ‘Red’ Smith Handicap for owner/trainer Rick Hedge and Lori and Martin Neyka’s Empire Equestrian. Purchased by Hedge for just $3,400 at the Alberta Yearling Sale, the now-five-year-old mare won $175,500 last year and $354,000 in her career. Big Hug was sired by Mr. Big and is out of the mare Temeeku, who broke her maiden for no tag at Del Mar, California. “Best horse I’ve ever trained,” said Hedge, 76, who has trained many outstanding thoroughbreds in his career and many more as a jockey.

From the racetrack to the show ring! Code, the first foal out of Crimson Deed by Omega Code, retired sound after his racing career and found a new purpose with a dedicated young rider from High River. Given the time and patience OTTBs need to transition, Carol built a strong bond with him before training for his second career. Now, they’re gearing up for their next big challenge—a show at Spruce Meadows from March 13-16. A true testament to the versatility and heart of Alberta-breds!
