Alberta Thoroughbred Community Loses a Valued Member

The Alberta Thoroughbred community lost a valued member with the passing of Ron St. Louis on Monday, June 5, 2017 at 71 years of age.

Ron had been a continuous member of the C.T.H.S. since 1999 and was a respected representative of the Alberta Division, serving on the Board of Directors for two terms between 2012 and 2017. He served as a member of the Breed Improvement Committee and as Chair of the Finance Committee, offering his extensive accounting knowledge as a resource to the Society.

Ron was an active Thoroughbred owner and breeder for many years based at his ranch in Swalwell, Alberta. He bred and raced a number of home bred Thoroughbreds under the name Winchester Stables. Runners in recent years have included Valid Position by Tempered Appeal, Highway Holly by Alydeed and Slew the Hunter by Slew City Slew. A recent homebred, Arctic Treasure by Cape Canaveral, just won her Maiden Claiming race on June 3, 2017. Ron was also involved as an owner with part interests in horses such as Smokin Jane by Holy Bull and Sun Runner by Brunswick. He was regularly involved in the C.T.H.S. Alberta Thoroughbred Sales both as a consignor and a purchaser.

The St. Louis family has requested, in lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations in Ron’s memory may be made to The Canadian Cancer Society or Thoroughbred Lasting Careers Society (TLCS) in care of the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (Alberta Division).

If you visit Anne Kursinski’s Market Street facility in Frenchtown, New Jersey, you might notice a striking bay gelding with a broad blaze and four white socks being ridden by one of her students or her partner, Carol Hoffman. You might wonder about his breeding—until you remember that for Kursinski, a member of the Show Jumping Hall of Fame, nothing can beat a good Thoroughbred. “I am a huge fan of the Thoroughbreds, no question,” said Kursinski, 65, who famously rode ex-race horse Eros to team silver at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. “Thoroughbreds are intelligent and athletic, brave and light.” The newest Thoroughbred in her life—Bobby Socks, so named in honor of his four white socks—became part of the Market Street family in 2022, after a chance conversation at a horse show between Kursinski and her longtime friend and retired show jumper Mary Chapot. “Mary said they had this Thoroughbred that was too slow for Laura [Chapot, Mary’s daughter], and she thought maybe we’d like to take a look,” Kursinski recal
