2022 CTHS Alberta Sale Yearling Consignment Highlights

A preview of some yearling consignment highlights as we approach the 2022 CTHS Alberta Yearling Sale!

The 2022 CTHS Alberta yearling sale will be held on Friday, September 16th at Westerner Park in Red Deer. A total of 58 quality Thoroughbred yearlings are consigned to the main catalogue including two Ontario breds and two Saskatchewan breds. 


Local sires represented include Big Lightning, Cape Canaveral, Charming Assassin, Driven West, Dynamic Sky, It’s No Joke, Mank, Marine Landing, Mr O’Prado, Mr. Recio and Singing Saint. Opportunities are also available to purchase yearlings sired by Afleet Alex, American Freedom, Birdstone, Bucchero, Cloud Computing, Destin, Driven West, Edison, Gormley, Old Forester, Pulpit, Ransom the Moon, Reload, Speighster, Sungold, War Correspondent and Wicked Strong. The following preview discusses some of the highlights from each consignment.


Gordon and Rosalind Alger

The Algers have two yearlings in their consignment, by the sires Mank and Edision. The Pulpit son Mank is a half-brother to the stakes winner Conquest Mo Money ($510,580) and is the sire of 2022 Shirley Vargo Handicap and RedTail Landing Handicap winner, Dance Shoes ($143,646) and CTHS Sales Stake winner Common Knowledge ($67,606).

Edison is a graded stakes winning son of Bernardini who captured the G3 Canadian Derby. The Edison gelding is the first foal for the stakes winning daughter of Stephanotis, Pigtails ($181,668). 


Beckham Ranch

Beckam Ranch is offering a filly by the graded stakes winning son of Maclean’s Music, Cloud Computing ($1,125,200). The first foals for Cloud Computing are two year olds of 2022. The dam of this filly is Genteela, a half-sister to the multiple graded stakes winning mare, Fourstar Crook ($1,580,450). The second filly in this consignment is by the graded stakes winner, Speightster, out of the Congrats mare, Kindest Regards. The dam is a half-sister to the graded stakes placed mare, La Song ($138,936).


Julie Brewster

A filly by the Hard Spun sire, Reload, is available in this consignment out of the proven line of Cool runners. The dam of this filly is a full sister to the Champion 2 year old colt in Alberta and multiple stakes winning Cool Kahuna ($147,776) and a half sister to the successful Alberta runners Cool Ventura (Horse of the Year and Champion Older Horse in Alberta, $301,884), Cool Synsation ($166,272), Cool Diablo ($138,074) and Cool Yer Boots ($31,186).


Esquirol Farms

Esquirol Farms has seven yearlings on offer by the Distorted Humor sire, It’s No Joke. The stakes winning sire has progeny earnings of over $6 Million and 67 winners including the graded stakes winner Bear No Joke ($607,501), Mallard’s Bro ($344,232) and Mr. Prankster ($306,468). 

Hips 1, 3, 11, 35 and 43 are yearlings out of successful race mares, Zanita Rosae ($86,968), Alamandra Drive ($240,799), Cat’s Review ($197,871), Oneforthecrew ($62,722) and Saint Sassy Sue ($107,297). Cat’s Review is a half sister to the multiple stakes winner Sharky’s Review ($685,425) and Shamrock Edge ($157,498). 


There is a lot of black type on the page of Hip 17, a gelding out of E Looe. This dam is a half sister to Shanghai Tariff ($426, 945), Starry Pursuit ($194,685), Vannistelrooy Star ($81,283) and G G’s Secondchance ($147,761). E Looe has produced 5 winners herself including Anyriderill Do ($90,504). 


Highfield Investment Group Inc.

Six yearlings make up this season’s consignment for Highfield with three sired by Cape Canaveral, two by Destin and one by War Correspondent.

Cape Canaveral is now pensioned but remains among the leading sires in Canada. The Mr. Prospector son has sired progeny with earnings of over $17.6 Million including 39 stakes winners and 309 winners. He is the sire of Alberta Champion Two and Three Year Old filly, Pearl of Knowledge ($143,303). Highlights from the dam’s side in the Cape Canaveral group are Hip 53 out of the multiple stakes winning Alberta bred mare Tell Me Lies ($266,620); Hip 4, a gelding out of the proven race mare Americas Dreaming (IRE) ($105,350) who has produced 2 winners including Pacioretty ($133,560) and Hip 26, a filly out of Jordy Y ($95,777) who is a half sister to Cape Time ($251,736). Jordy Y is a proven broodmare having produced 4 winners including Souper Fly Over ($348,254).


Hips 18 and 44 are by the Giant’s Causeway son, Destin, whose first foals are two year olds of 2022. Destin was a stakes winner of 5 races and earned $947,800 on the track with wins that include the G2 Tampa Bay Derby and Marathon Stakes. The Destin gelding is out of Ennis Lady ($50,424) who is a full sister to Despite the Odds ($261,429). Ennis Lady has produced 6 winners including CTHS Sales Stake winner, Grandma Jo ($36,195), Love and Lemons ($110,340) and Woven Lady ($106,342). The Destin filly is out of Samara Street ($155,220) who has produced 2 winners including Choteau ($122,394).


The War Correspondent yearling is listed as Hip 5 out of the proven race mare Ballynoe ($160,361) who has produced 3 winners including Aqualityindividual ($66,339) and Too Legit ($46,057).


Highfield Investment Group, Inc., Agent

There are 4 yearlings entered as Hips 19, 40, 49 and 55 consigned by Highfield IG Inc as Agent by the sires Reload, It’s No Joke and Cape Canaveral. The highlight of this group may be the filly out of Ty’s Brooke, a half-sister to Double Bear ($185,313) and Red River Bear ($57,353). This Cape Canaveral filly is the first foal for the Pike Place Gold daughter.


Blair Huston and G.R. Scott

A Singing Saint filly is offered in the sale by Blair Huston and G.R. Scott. Singing Saint has sired progeny with earnings of over $3 Million and 43 winners including Harp N Halo ($177,710) and Tairneach ($288,076). This fill is out of the Artie Schiller mare, Sweet Angel Girl.


Blair Huston

Two colts are available as Hips 7 and 56 and in this consignment by Cape Canaveral and It’s No Joke. Hip 7 is the first foal for the Old Forester mare, Candalier, a half sister to Letsgetitseventeen ($82,054). Hip 56 is out of the High Yield daughter, Vogue Queen, a half-sister to Radical Riley ($292,198). The High Yield daughter is a proven producer with 3 winners including Winninginfashion ($191,069).


Alivia Kettleson

A filly by It’s No Joke out of Lily Rules, is on offer in this consignment. This yearling is the first foal for the Peace Rules mare.


Mervin Lansing

7 yearlings listed as Hips 2, 10, 16, 22, 23, 32 and 47, all by Marine Landing are available in the consignment submitted by Mervin Lansing. Marine Landing is a son of Smart Strike, leading sire of 146 winners and 14 champions including Curlin ($10.5 Million).

Hip 10 is the second foal out of the Jet West mare, Caro’s Song ($180,138), a half-sister to Smil’n From Above ($175,900). Hip 22 is a gelding out of the Grand Slam mare, Hangingonaprayer ($152,607), a half-sister to Conquest Daddyo ($324,127) and Hangingbyathread ($307,630). The filly listed as Hip 23 is out of the Big E E mare, High Dollar Gal ($32,081), winner of the CTHS Sales Stakes. Hip 47 is a filly out of the Sky Mesa mare, Sky Heat, a half sister to Tipperary Melody ($68,540) and has produced 4 winners including Joker Man ($109,831).


Roy McClintock

The McClintock consignment has 5 yearlings by Dynamic Sky, Charming Assassin and Cape Canaveral. The Sky Mesa son Dynamic Sky is a stakes winner of over $1 Million and has sired 3 crops to date with earnings of $346,444 including Jill Marie ($137,741). Charmin Assassin is a son of Van Nistelrooy and has sired 6 winners to date with earnings of $94,327).

The dam of Hip 39, the Dynamic Sky filly is the Lemon Drop Kid daughter, Precious Lemon, who has produced 3 winners from 4 foals including the Sturgeon River Stakes winner, Teemans Kid ($57,768). The first foal for Teemans Kid is offered as Hip 52, by the leading Canadian sire, Cape Canveral.


Moonshine Meadow Ranch

A colt by Bucchero is listed as Hip 45 and a Birdstone filly entered as Hip 46. The Kantharos son, Bucchero, is a multiple graded stakes winner of $947,936 and his first foals are two year olds of 2022. Birdstone is a classic winner of $1.58 Million and has sired 351 winners with over $31 Million in earnings including champions Summer Bird ($2.32 Million) and Mine That Bird ($2.28 Million)

The Bucchero colt is of the Gone West mare, Seek to Dance, a half-sister to Diadella ($563,274), Say a Novena ($329,870), D’Cajun Cat ($211,595) and El Kingdom ($129,783). The dam of the Birdstone filly is the proven race mare, Silkworm ($104,531), winner of the black type Freedom of the City Stakes. Sikworm has produced 2 foals to race, both winners, including Victory Built ($136,404). 


Doug Oberg

A filly by Big Lightning out of Wilko Rose makes up the Oberg consignment and is listed as Hip 58. The Bernardini son, Big Lightning, has progeny with 17 winners and earnings of over $360,000 including the stakes winner Emma Jean Too ($70,731).

The dam, Wilko Rose, has produced 2 foals to race including the Sturgeon River Stakes winner Light Fast Feet ($39,707).


Pat O’Hare and Jeff Lalonde

Two geldings by the sires Driven West and It’s No Joke are listed as Hips 36 and 37 in this consignment. Hip 36 offers the opportunity to buy from the first crop of foals sired by the Awesome Again son, Driven West, as this group are just yearlings of 2022. The dam of the Driven West yearling is the Vilzak daughter, Papoose Dancer ($102,877) who is a half-sister to Shilla ($350,704) and Tahnee ($259,276). The It’s No Joke gelding is out of the Orientate mare, Parallelogram, who is a half-sister to Tip Tap Tapizar ($199,310) and Divine Music ($153,658).


Scott Palmer Ranching Ltd.

The sires Sungold and Old Forester are represented in this consignment of two geldings by Scott Palmer Ranching Ltd. Sungold has sired 50 winners and progeny earnings of over $2.7 Million including graded stakes placed Sunburst ($153,155) and Alberta Champion Older Mare, Infinite Patience ($304,990). The Sungold yearling is out of the Macho Uno mare, Carmen’s Kiss who has produced Makealittlenoise ($76,987) and Only One Kiss ($38,973).

Old Forester is a sire of 298 winners and progeny earnings of over $31 Million including champion Pink Lloyd ($1.88 Million). The dam of the Old Forester yearling is the stakes placed Chandlers Heart ($166,660) who has produced two winners including the CTHS Sales Stakes winner Shotthrutheheart ($50,345).


Starline Thoroughbreds

Three Cape Canaveral yearlings are on offer in the Starline Thoroughbreds consignment. An opportunity is available to own a colt out of the Kafwain mare, Lil Missknowitall ($188,536) who has produced 3 winners including Alberta Champion Two and Three Year Old filly Pearl of Knowledge ($142,917) and CTHS Alberta Sales Stakes winner Common Knowledge ($67,513). The Latent Heat mare, Whinny Magoogin ($45,831) is the dam of a second yearling and is a half-sister to As You Like ($371,693).


Stone Ranches

A Speightster gelding is the sole entry in the Stone Ranches offering. This stakes winning sire has progeny earnings with $7.4 Million and 116 winners. The First Samurai mare, Geisha Peebles is a half-sister to Orgullosa (winner at 3 in 2022, in Venezuela) and stakes placed Mesonic ($34,850). Geisha Peebles has produced 3 foals to race, all winners including Kitten’s Peebles 9$93,392).


Stone Ranches, Boe and Janet Stone

A gelding by Ransom the Moon and a filly by Gormley are available in this consignment. The stakes winning son of leading sire Malibu Moon, Ransom the Moon ($884,829), has first foals that are just two year olds of 2022. The dam of the Ransom the Moon yearling is an Aikenite daughter who has produced the winner Smokin Bow ($58,530) from one foal to race.

The Santa Anita Derby winning son of Malibu Moon, Gormley ($1 Million) has progeny earnings of $2.3 Million and has sired 43 winners even though his first foals are just three year olds of 2022. The dam of the Gormley filly is a Lawyer Ron daughter who has produced two winners from three foals including Get Some Muny ($15,815).


Winsome Acres

Two Mr. O’Prado colts are offered by Winsome Acres. Mr. O’Prado is a son of stakes winner Paddy O’Prado and a half-brother to graded stakes winner Deans Kitten ($802,950). The first foals for Mr O’Prado are two year olds of 2022. Hip 6 is out of the Lost Canyon mare, Blinkanshesgone, who is a full sister to Clever Speed ($130,126) and a half-sister to Blinkanhesgone ($82,037) and Clever Fellow ($40,895). Hip 25 is out of the State City mare, Iva State who has produced the stakes placed runner Future State ($44,900).


Workwize Ent. Stables

Five yearlings are available in the Workwize Ent. Stables group of yearlings by the sires Dynamic Sky, Speightster and American Freedom. The Pulpit son, American Freedom, is a stakes winner of over $700,000 and his progeny includes 41 winners and total earnings of $1.9 Million. The first foals for this sire are three year olds of 2022.

Hip 24 is a Dynamic Sky colt out of Isa Dixie by Dixieland Band. This dam is a half-sister to the multiple stakes winner, Beau Brass ($468,129), Bingo ($220,317) and Pretty Beaucat ($112,497). Isa Dixie is a proven producer with three foals to race, all winners, including Alphagate ($55,158) and Phil Power ($38,485).

The American Freedom colt offered as Hip 33 is the first foal for the Majesticperfection mare, Miss Marsha Lynn, a half-sister to the graded stakes placed runner, Forever Juanito ($303,014).
