Alberta’s breeding industry is thriving, with qualifying stallion owners sharing in an impressive $85,000 in breeding awards for the 2024 season!

The Horse Racing Alberta Breed Improvement Program Stallion Bonus rewarded 34 stallions at a rate of 3.25%, building on the momentum of 2023’s $75,000 at 3.26%—a testament to the growing success of Alberta-sired runners.

The second place stallion bonus of $8,217 earned by Giant’s Causeway son, Fed Biz, was secured by his top Alberta bred, No More Lies. This two year old filly led the first crop of Alberta bred Fed Biz runners last season with $115,000 in earnings and a record of 4 firsts and 1 second from 5 starts. No More Lies is a CTHS Alberta sale graduate out of the multiple stakes winning Captain Bodgit mare, Tell Me Lies. No More Lies was bred by Bushido Stables and is owned by Stetson Inc. Ryan Stetson, Stetson Enterprises Ltd. and Everblack Cattle Co Ltd. Fed Biz also sired stallion bonus earners What Women Want, Oki, Biz Babe, In Your Biz, Seattle Sting and Alluring Ali.

It’s No Joke secured third place on the stallion bonus leaderboard with $6,486, thanks to a strong showing from his Alberta-bred progeny. Leading the way was Kulsum, a CTHS Alberta Sale graduate who earned $42,010 with a record of two wins and three thirds in nine starts. Bred by Pierre Esquirol out of the Formal Gold mare Pretty Golden, Kulsum is owned by Mohamad Khan. Contributing to It’s No Joke’s impressive bonus were Amusing Way, Distorted Rose, Parzanni, We the Fringe, Diamond Di, E Pay All the Way, Flashing Joker, Hashtagugotthis, and No More Jo King.

Saturdaynitelites earned fourth position with a bonus of $5,509 for the success of his Alberta bred progeny last season. The leading Alberta bred for Saturdaynitelites was Dontbringmedown with $65,050 in earnings and a record of 2 wins, 2 seconds and 1 third in 5 start. Dontbringmedown was bred out of the El Roblar mare, Plunge, by owner and breeder Perry Pellerin. Saturdaynitelites runners Thrillofthenite, I’ve Got All Nite, My Kind of Nite, Icouldbetheone, Darkcloudofsmoke, Heysweetdarlin, Icouldbetheone, Plungeintothenite and Turn It Loose helped earn the Any Given Saturday son his Stallion Bonus.

Imperialism, a son of Langfuhr, rounded out the top five on the stallion bonus leaderboard with $5,120. Leading his Alberta-bred progeny was Kiss Me Hello, who earned $23,075 for the season with a record of two wins, two seconds, and two thirds in nine starts. Bred by Pierre Esquirol out of the Kissin Kriss mare Kiss Me Goodbye, Kiss Me Hello is owned by Willow Creek Farms. Contributing to Imperialism’s earnings were fellow Alberta-breds Imperial Go Boy, Goldie Socks, Plum Blue, Runnin Baby J, Lucky Legs, and Prenton.

The upcoming 2025 season in Alberta is set to be an exciting one, with the Stallion Owners Breeding Awards increasing to an impressive  $100,000! This boost promises a season full of growth and anticipation for breeders and enthusiasts alike.

Adding to the excitement, two new stallions are joining the province; Moonshine Now and Tapiture. Moonshine Now, a son of Malibu Moon, comes from a stellar pedigree, out of Ask Me When, whose lineage boasts multiple black-type runners, including a full sibling with earnings over $500,000 and a graded stakes performance. Moonshine Now   stands at   Copper Kettle Performance Horses in Didsbury, bringing his impressive bloodlines and performance potential to Alberta’s breeding scene.

The Tapit son,  Tapiture, out of the Olympio mare, Free Spin,   is new to Canada for 2025 and standing at Highfield Stock Farm.  An outstanding sire that you won't want to miss! With over $1.5 million in earnings on the track and a stellar career in the breeding shed, Tapiture has established himself as a sire of successful runners. His impressive stats include 9 stakes winners and 6 stakes placed runners last season, making him a top choice for breeders looking to produce top-quality runners.

With these new additions and increased awards, the 2025 season is shaping up to be a game-changer for Alberta’s breeding industry! Alberta offers an exciting selection of premium stallions for breeders looking to pair their top mares with the best in the industry. Among them is the only son of Into   Mischief standing in Western Canada at Workwize Stables, a rare opportunity you won’t want to miss!
