Value Plus yearling consigned by C.W. Matier and purchased by Don Knight & Don Danard for $32,000

Strong demand for quality Thoroughbred yearlings led to positive overall increases at the 2021 CTHS Alberta Thoroughbred Sale held on September 17th. Gross sales this year totalled $405,600 with 37 yearlings sold, an increase from the $327,400 for 39 yearlings sold last year. The median price for a yearling increased to $9,500 compared with the $4,500 figure reached in 2020 during a sale affected by uncertainty in the economy. The average price paid for a yearling was $10,962, an increase over the $8,394.87 average from last year’s sale.

Hip #30, a chestnut Alberta bred gelding by Value Plus was the high seller of the 2021 sale, purchased for $32,000 by Don Knight and Don Danard. The flashy yearling was from the consignment of C.W. Matier. Value Plus is a stakes winning son of Unbridled’s Song with progeny earnings of $13.7 Million and winners that include Long on Value ($1,136,253) and All Due Respect ($468,880). The Value Plus gelding is out of the stakes winning mare Holiday Maker who earned over $150,000 on the track and is a half-sister to the $500,000 earning stakes winner, Adore.

A group of fillies made up the next four highest selling yearlings. The second highest selling was Hip #21, an Alberta bred Tapiture yearling consigned by Scott Palmer Ranching Ltd. and purchased by Shot in the Dark Racing Corp. for $25,000. Tapiture is a stakes winning son of Tapit with progeny earnings of over $9 Million from three crops of racing age including Jesus’ Team ($1,338,540). The dam of this yearling is Carmen’s Kiss who has produced two winners from two foals to race, Makealittlenoise ($76,987) and Only One Kiss ($34,589).

Bruce Ternan and Dawson Guhle were the leading consignor by gross sales with three Marine Landing yearlings selling for a total of $54,000. The leading buyer by gross sales was Don Knight and Don Danard who purchased the high selling gelding and Hip #34, a Shaman Ghost filly.
