FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Wednesday, October 13, 2021
Cape Canaveral has been pensioned from stallion duty at Highfield Stock Farm at Okotoks, Alberta. Cape
Canaveral has been one of the leading sires in Canada since 2008, and he has been the foundation sire
at Highfield for 13 years. Cape Canaveral has 18 crops of racing age, 519 foals, 417 starters, 38 stakes
winners, 304 winners of 1,046 races and earnings of over $17.5 million.
The 25-year-old is one of the last sons of Mr. Prospector standing in North America, and is out of 1990
Kentucky Oaks (G1) winning mare Seaside Attraction. Cape Canaveral won his first start at 2, and went
on to win the San Miguel Stakes (G3) as a 3-year-old and won three of four starts before his retirement.
He has had an incredible influence on racing in Alberta.
“Cape Canaveral has been a great fit for our program, and has been an asset to racing in Alberta. His
offspring are precocious, athletic and have a lot of speed, he definitely stamped them with his best
qualities,” says Adrian Munro. “He’s been a great stallion for us.”
Cape Canaveral has sired multiple Alberta Champions, including Pearl of Knowledge, Onestaratatime
and Capitalism. His progeny also helped Highfield Investment Group win leading breeder of Alberta breds
in 2010, 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2020. Cape Canaveral progeny remain strong at race tracks and
sales in Alberta.
”For 13 years Cape has been the undisputed king of the farm, and he still has his paddock outside where
he can keep an eye on things, and he will remain in the same stall in the stallion barn every night,” says
stallion manager Jennifer Buck. “He’s been a huge part of our breeding program and we’ve been blessed
to have him. We wish him a long and happy retirement.
As a Broodmare Sire Cape Canaveral continues to make his mark on racing. He is the sire of 72 dams of
foals of racing age with 182 runners, 128 winners (52%) and 12 stakes winners.

n Memory of Golden Made (1998 - 2025)
Today, we say goodbye to Golden Made, whose beauty, kindness and spirit made her a favourite for everyone on the farm.
Golden Made earned over $372,000 on the track with 11 wins from ages 2 to 5, but her greatest gift to us was in the breeding shed: 12 foals, 12 to race, 12 to win. She was perfect.
Highfield Stock Farm was fortunate to purchase Golden Made at the Keeneland January Sale in 2007, and she has been a cherished part of our broodmare band ever since.

Against the backdrop of a thrilling day of live racing — and the excitement of the Kentucky Derby — Alberta’s top Thoroughbreds and their connections were honored for their success during the 2024 season. With champions crowned and the starting gates open, the 2025 season began in true Alberta racing style.

The Princess of the Track is now Queen of the Hill.
Absolutely marvelous, Big Hug was named Alberta’s Horse Of the Year Saturday at the annual Night of Champions Awards dinner at Century Mile.
Also named Alberta’s 2024 Champion Older Mare and Champion Alberta-bred, Big Hug won six of her eight starts in Alberta last year capturing the Founders Distaff, CTHS Sales stake, the Fall Classic Distaff and the R.K. ‘Red’ Smith Handicap for owner/trainer Rick Hedge and Lori and Martin Neyka’s Empire Equestrian.
Purchased by Hedge for just $3,400 at the Alberta Yearling Sale, the now-five-year-old mare won $175,500 last year and $354,000 in her career.
Big Hug was sired by Mr. Big and is out of the mare Temeeku, who broke her maiden for no tag at Del Mar, California.
“Best horse I’ve ever trained,” said Hedge, 76, who has trained many outstanding thoroughbreds in his career and many more as a jockey.
