Alberta Bred Stakes Highlights in the 2021 Season

The 2021 Live Thoroughbred race meet was held entirely at Century Mile Racetrack and Casino, with a stakes season that began on June 18th with the RedTail Landing Handicap and finished on October 30th with the Don Getty Handicap. A total of $1.6 Million was offered in purse money over 29 open and restricted stakes through out the meet. Alberta bred runners had success throughout the meet with wins in the following stakes races .

The Alberta bred FLASHFORDANI achieved the first stakes win for an Alberta bred on September 3rd in the black type $50,000 Birdcatcher Stakes. The Tapiture gelding captured the win from a field of five entries in the $50,000 race for two year olds over seven furlongs. Flashfordani was bred by Highfield Investment Group Inc. out of the successful race mare, Ave’s Halo ($285,392). The two year old finished his debut season with $57,806 in earnings for owner Irving Devey and a record of 4-2-2-0.


GREEK GEEK was the next Alberta bred winner in the $75,000 Century Mile Handicap on September 11th. The CTHS Sale graduate won the open black type stakes race from a full field of eleven entries for owner Riversedge Racing Stables Ltd. Greek Geek also prevailed in his next start out on Alberta Breeders’ Fall Classic day in the $50,000 Alberta Breeders’ Handicap for three year olds and up.

The Bar None Ranches homebred runner SARAHS ELEGANCE dueled it out with Champion Three Year Old Pearl of Knowledge to capture the 25th running of the $50,000 Alberta Fall Classic Distaff for three year old and up fillies and mares over 1 1/16 miles. This was the first stakes win for the four year old Run to Victory mare and brings her career earnings to $69,433 with a record of 11-5-2-1.


CTHS Sale graduate DUNE D’ORO was the winner of the 25th running of the $50,000 Red Diamond Express Handicap for three year old and up Alberta breds over 6 furlongs. The Atreides four year old was bred by Doug Oberg and is owned by Mitch Sutherland. Dune D’Oro has now won four of his last five starts and his lifetime record is now 23-9-5-2 with earnings of $152,961.

 

DANCE SHOES was the official winner of the 44th running of the $50,000 Alberta Oaks for three year old Alberta fillies over 1 1/16 miles after holding off a late closing charge from Plum Blue. The three year old Mank filly has now won six of her nine starts for a record of 11-7-0-1 and $66,197 in earnings to date. Dance Shoes is owned by Mohamad Khan and was bred by James McFadyen.

 

The 41st running of the $50,000 Sturgeon River Stakes Stakes over 6 furlongs for two year old fillies was captured by the favorite, ONEOFTHEMGIRLS. This was the first win for Oneofthemgirls in four starts and her first race in Alberta. The Exhi filly is owned by Highfield Investment Group Inc, Curtis Landry & Irving Devey and was bred by Highfield Investment Group & Curtis Landry. Oneofthemgirls was the high selling yearling in the 2020 CTHS Alberta Thoroughbred sale.

 

Bar None Ranches had a second win from another homebred with BOSS MAN CAN and his decisive victory in the 43rd running of the $50,000 Alberta Premier’s Futurity for two year old Alberta breds over 6 furlongs. This win was in the first lifetime start for the Can the Man gelding who now has a lifetime record of 2-2-0-0 and $31,728 in earnings.

 

The 40th running of the $50,000 Beaufort Stakes for three year old Alberta breds over 1 1/16 miles was won by THESCHACK in an exciting finish by a nose against favorite Smart Play. This stakes victory was the third win in three starts for the three year old CTHS Alberta sale graduate who now has $47,886 in earnings and a record of 5-3-1-0. The Shackleford gelding is owned by Dorn Ries and was bred by Brad Auger & Running Fawcett Thoroughbreds Ltd.

 

GREEK GEEK continued his wins with a victory in the $50,000 Three and Four Year Old Sales Stake for colts and geldings on October 16th at Century Mile Racetrack and Casino from a field of eight. The Alberta bred gelding adds this to his recent back to back wins in the black type Century Mile Handicap and the Alberta Breeders’ Handicap.


ONEOFTHEMGIRLS won the $50,000 Two Year Old Fillies Sales Stake on October 22nd from a field of six. The Alberta bred Exhi filly added this victory to a recent win in the Sturgeon River Stakes, bringing her career earnings to $53,509 and a record of 5-2-0-1 in her debut season. Oneofthemgirls was bred by Highfield Investment Group Inc and Curtis Landry and is owned by Highfield Investment Group, Curtis Landry and Irving Devey.


GREEK GEEK wrapped up the stakes season at Century Mile Racetrack and Casino with a decisive victory in the final stakes race of the season, the $50,000 Don Getty Handicap on October 30th. The four year old had the best season of his career in 2021 with an impressive record of 9-7-1-1 and $139,535 in earnings for the season. The lifetime earnings for the gelding are now $166,697 with a record of 19-7-5-3 for owner Riversedge Racing Stables Ltd. The Misremembered gelding was bred by Moonshine Meadows Ranch and sold through the 2018 CTHS Alberta sale to Riversedge Racing Stables Ltd.
