2021 Leading Alberta Stallions

The leading Alberta stallions by progeny earnings for Alberta bred Thoroughbreds have been announced for the 2021 season. The top five eligible sires in order of progeny earnings are CAPE CANAVERAL, EXHI, GAYEGO, WHERE’S THE RING and IMPERIALISM.

Cape Canaveral

Cape Canaveral is at the top of the list with Alberta bred progeny with earnings of $227, 975 last season. The graded stakes winning son of Mr. Prospector is one of the leading sires in Canada with total progeny earnings of over $17.5 Million. The leading Alberta bred horse for Cape Canaveral in 2021 was CAPA BELLA with earnings of $34,380 and a record of 8-2-3-1 , bred by Almac Racing Stable. Other Cape Canaveral earners last season included Capalli, Chickaletty, Cigarillo, Greaceful Spirit, Lady Amelia, Music at Work, Our Dandys Boy, Pearl of Knowledge, Serappy G, Sir Miezie, Triple Power and Wedge Pond. Cape Canaveral was pensioned from stallion service at Highfield Stock Farm near Okotoks, Alberta in 2021.


The multiple graded stakes winning son of Mr. Prospector, Exhi, was second on the Alberta Stallion progeny earnings list with total earnings for his Alberta bred runners of $161,991 last season. His leading earner was two year old runner ONEOFTHEMGIRLS, who had a record of 5-2-0-1 and earnings of $66,030 in 2021, with wins in the 2021 CTHS Sales Stakes and Sturgeon River Stakes. Highfield Investment Group Inc and Curtis Landry were the breeders of Oneofthemgirls. Exhi also sired the Alberta bred earners Aberdeen Annie, Archieway, Boldt Bronco, First Base, Nodiggitynodoubt, Old Double Diamond, Ryanwater and Zelda’s Wisdom. Exhi stood in Alberta at Highfield Stock Farm near Okotoks and has now been relocated to Big Oaks Farm in the U.S.


The Gilded Time son, Gayego, was third on the list with total Alberta bred progeny earnings of $131,076. His top earner last season was COUNT ON IT with a record of 10-0-3-0 and earnings of $14,505. The three year old was bred by Bar None Ranches Ltd. who has stood Gayego since 2013 in DeWinton, Alberta. Other Gayego runners with eligible earnings last season included Bar No Q, Dark Storm Coming, Fran From Peru, Go Mama, Jazzy Girl, Perdition, Precious Notes, Spanish Diva, Steal a Kiss and Trader Lynn.


Where’s the Ring was fourth on the list with total eligible progeny earnings of $122,702. The leading runner for the Seeking the Gold son last season was ZICATELA with a record of 10-1-3-2 and $30,100 in earnings, bred by Dawson Guhle. Other earners sired by Where’s the Ring included Crafty Engagement, Press Gang, Solo Ring and Striders Ring. The son of Seeking the Gold moved to Peaceful Valley Farms in Didsbury, Alberta beginning with the 2015 season and is now standing at Colebrook Farms in Ontario.


Rounding out the top five eligible sires in the Stallion bonus program is the sire, Imperialism, with total Alberta progeny earnings of $106, 258. The leading runner in 2021 for the Langfuhr son was Plum Blue with earnings of $61,703 and a record of 10-2-4-1. Imperialism also sired the 2021 earners, April’s Imperial, Cranberry Creek, I’manimperialgirl, Imperial Dash, Imperial Flavor, Imperialite, Princess Paisley, Runnin Baby J and Steamin Demon. Imperialism stood at Esquirol Farms in Ryley, Alberta until his passing in 2021.


Horse Racing Alberta's Stallion Owners' Breeding support for 2021 totaled $65,000 and is distributed through the Thoroughbred Breed Improvement Program. Cheques have now been mailed out to qualifying recipients of the program. 
The percentage for the 2021 Stallion Owners' is 4.02% and is based on the following criteria:

"Stallion bonus will be paid proportionately to Stallion owners whose Stallions have Eligible Alberta Thoroughbred progeny with earnings of $10,000 or greater during the Calendar year. Stallions must have stood in the province of Alberta for the entire Calendar year of conception for each year’s crop to be eligible." 

Please note that it is a requirement that recipients of the Breed Improvement Program - Thoroughbred Breeders' Bonus be members in good standing of the C.T.H.S. (Full or Associate Member designation) in order to receive the Breeders' Bonus.
