2023 CTHS Alberta Sale Preview

Highlights from the catalogue of 71 yearlings consigned to the 2023 Alberta Thoroughbred Sale

The 2023 CTHS Alberta yearling sale will be held on Friday, September 22nd at Westerner Park in Red Deer. A total of 71 quality Thoroughbred yearlings are consigned to the main catalogue by a variety of quality stallions. 

Local sires represented include Counterforce, Fed Biz, It’s No Joke, Max Forever, Medallist, Misremembered, Mr O’Prado, O’Prado Again, Schramsberg, Singing Saint, and Tour de Force.

Opportunities are also available to purchase yearlings sired by Bakken, Bee Jersey, Bodexpress, Brody’s Cause, Cloud Computing, Coal Front, Counterforce, Cross Traffic, Estevan, Gormley, Instilled Regard, It’s a Danzig, Lemon Drop Mousse, Lent, Local Legend, Midnight Storm, Mor Spirit, Sungold, Tale of Ekati, Tapwrit and Thousand Words. The following preview discusses some of the highlights from each consignment.


Gordon and Rosalind Alger

There are 3 yearlings in the Alger consignment by the sires Lemon Drop Mousse and It’s a Danzig. Lemon Drop Mousse is a son of champion older horse Lemon Drop Kid, sire of 116 stakes winners and 1 champion. It’s a Danzig is a son of winner Danzig who was leading sire 4 times in U.A.E. and the U.S. and sired 202 stakes winners and 4 champions including Chief’s Crown ($2.19 Million). A gelding is on offer by It’s a Danzig out of the multiple stakes placed mare Misty Do It. This is the first foal for Misty Do it, who finished her race career with $93,119 in earnings and six wins. A Lemon Drop Mousse gelding is available out of the Flatter mare, Purple Barbie. This is the first foal for this mare who is a half-sister to the stakes placed runner Future Vision.


Beckham Ranch

2 Fed Biz colts and a Midnight Storm filly are available through the Beckham Ranch consignment. Midnight Storm is a stakes winner of $1.78 Million and a proven sire of 55 winners of 110 races and over $3.86 in progeny earnings from 3 crops of racing age including the Canadian Derby winner Great Escape ($388,661). The dam of this filly is the proven broodmare Heywards Park who has produced 4 winners including Empire Pass ($195,887). Heywards Park is a half-sister to the multiple stakes placed winner Tapped ($175,696).


Julie Brewster

The Brewster consignment has a Fed Biz filly on offer out of the stakes winning mare Via Bendita. This mare was a winner of the R.K. (Red) Smith Handicap and third in the black type Northlands Oaks, to finish her race career with $55,624 in earnings. Via Bendita is a half-sister to the stakes placed mare All About Laughs ($37,697) and has already produced a winner from her only foal to race, Keep Your Cool ($10,818).


Bushido Stables

Bushido Stables has two Fed Biz yearlings available; a filly out of the multiple stakes winning Tell Me Lies and a colt out of the proven broodmare, Count the Change. Tell Me Lies had 9 wins in 15 starts on the track and has produced 2 foals to race including Breslin ($15,924). Tell Me Lies is a half-sister to stakes winners Mexicali Blues, Centrefire, Golden Cup and stakes placed runners No Walkin’ Joe, Charterhill, Golden Oldie, Cappuchino to Go, Howmuchistoomuch and Street Made. The dam of the colt, Count the Change, has produced 2 winners from 2 foals to race including stakes placed Count On It ($69,465).


Leland Cockrum

The Cockrum offers choice from among 4 Local Legend and 2 Estevan fillies. Local Legend is a Storm Cat son and his first foals are 3 year olds of 2023. Storm Cat is a leading sire twice and sire of 181 stakes winners and 8 champions including Giant’s Causeway. A highlight may be the Local Legend filly out of the stakes placed mare Desperate Appeal ($45,916) by Tempered Appeal. This is a chance to buy her first foal out of this mare who had 3 wins at 3 and 4 and was second in the Princess Margaret Stakes and third in the 2 year old sales stakes.

Estevan is a stakes winner of 6 races ($412,653) and has sired 4 winners of 12 races with progeny earnings of over $125,000 to date. An Estevan filly is available out of the Nation Wide News mare, Dianation, who won her only start in the Gold Strike Stakes.


Dabb Holdings

3 fillies by the leading Canadian sire, Fed Biz, are on offer from Dabb Holdings. The first yearling in the catalogue in this consignment and is out of the stakes winning Cape Canaveral mare, Ginger Smash ($110,495) who was the winner of the Sturgeon River Stakes and multiple stakes placed. Ginger Smash is a full sister to winner, Lost My Aura ($34,505) and multiple stakes placed Kennedy’s Halo ($42,662). Ginger Smash has produced 2 foals to race including Im a Whiskey Gal, winner at 3 ($7,000). 


Troy Dorchester

An opportunity to purchase a Tour de Force filly or a Fed Biz filly is available in the Dorchester consignment. Tour de Force ($213,360) was a graded stakes placed runner and is now a locally standing stallion whose first foals are yearlings of 2023. Tour de Force is a son of champion and 2 time Breeders’ Cup winner, Tiznow. Tour de Force is out of multiple G1 winner, Dream Supreme, a G1 producer and out of a G1 winner herself. This yearling is out of a Cape Canaveral mare, Solar Sally while the Fed Biz yearling is out of a Perfect Soul mare, Eldorado’s Soul.


Esquirol Farms

The Esquirol consignment offers a variety of yearlings by the sires Bee Jersey, Gormley, Cross Traffic, Coal Front, It’s No Joke, Tale of Ekati and Cloud Computing.

The first foals for the Jersey Town son, Bee Jersey, are just 3 year olds of 2023 yet the sire already has progeny with 13 winners of 22 races and earnings of over $800,000. His winners include Infinite Diamond ($115,389) and My Happiness ($114,384). The dam of the Bee Jersey yearling on offer is the Macho Uno mare, Holy Force ($94,783) who has produced the stakes placed Speightsforce.

The Gormley filly is sired by a stakes winner of over $1 Million whose progeny have earned over $5.7 Million. This yearling is out of the stakes placed Kissin Kris mare, Kiss Me Goodbye ($83,577) who has produced 2 foals to race including stakes placed Kiss Me Hello ($15,740).

A colt by the graded stakes winner, Cross Traffic, is available. This sire has progeny with winners of 472 races and earnings of $16.5 million including 4 champions. This colt is out of the stakes winning Orientate mare, Oneforthecrew ($62,722).

The Coal Front colt on offers an opportunity to purchase from a relatively new sire who was a stakes winner of over $1.8 Million and has first foals that are just 2 year olds of 2023. This colt is the first foal for the dam of this colt; a Stormy Atlantic mare, Solon’s Warning who had 7 wins and earnings of $106,449.

The sire It’s No Joke fillies has 3 fillies available in this consignment out of 3 well-bred, proven race mares. Among these mares is the Grindstone mare, Char’s Still Here ($73,060) is a dam of 8 foals to race and 7 winners including the well-known Alberta stakes winner, Smart Fix ($234,462) and the multiple stakes placed Silent Sam ($71,979). The Awesome Again mare, Alamandra Drive ($240,799) and proven dam is the dam of the second filly. Alamandra Drive has produced 4 foals to race, all winners, including Jeff Fa Fa ($24,696). The third filly is out of the Formal Gold mare, Wild Deuces ($77,186), who comes from the very successful Wild Creek ($189,674) line of mares on the dam’s side.

A yearling colt is on offer by the classic winner, Cloud Computing ($1.125 Million) whose first foals are 3 year olds of 2023 and progeny already include 37 winners and earnings of over $2 Million. The dam of this colt is the stakes winner Skimming mare, Zanita Rosase, who has produced Famous Last Words, winner at 2 ($8,236).

The stakes winner, Tale of Ekati ($1.18 Million) is represented by a filly in this consignment. Tale of Ekati has sired progeny with earnings of over $21 Million including 255 winners. The dam of this filly is a Bold n’Flashy stakes placed mare, Amnesian ($180,552).


Del Gehring - Lone Tree Farm

A Fed Biz colt out of the stakes winning mare, Ballynoe is on offer in this consignment. The Distorted Humor mare earned $160,361 on the track and is a proven broodmare with 3 winners from 4 foals to race. Her winning progeny include Too Legit ($88,104) and Aqualityindividual ($66,339).


Highfield Investment Group, Inc.

The Highfield consignment offers the opportunity to purchase from among 4 yearlings by the leading Canadian sire, Fed Biz.

The Giant’s Causeway son sold for $950,000 yearling and comes from the direct family of Pulpit, Tale of the Cat and Johannesburg. Fed Biz was a 2-time track record-setter and the fastest son at stud of leading sire Giant’s Causeway; he broke Zenyatta’s 8 ½-furlong track record at Del Mar – 1:41 flat; broke 7-furlong track record at Del Mar while defeating champion Goldencents – 1:21.12.

Fed Biz has sired 6 crops of racing age and his progeny include 15 stakes winners and 248 winners with earnings of over $19.7 Million. Fed Biz runners include the G1 winner Zenden ($1.13 Million) and G2 winners Inthemidstofbiz ($344,071) and Change of Control ($983,925).

The first yearling for the Cape Canaveral mare, Heartless Sofiya is on offer. This dam is a half-sister to stakes winners Free Fee Lady ($337,691) and Drake’s Victory ($298,536). A filly out of the Street Cry (IRE) mare, Samara Street is also available. Samara Street ($155,220) is a half-sister to Miss Lucky ($226,006) and has produced 5 foals to race including the 2 winners Choteau ($122,394) and Rumohr Reigns ($81,669). A gelding out of the Stormy Atlantic mare, Swaying is in this consignment. Swaying is a half-sister to stakes winner Devereux ($329,134) and her second foal is a three year old of 2023.

5 Fed Biz yearlings and a Counterforce yearling are on offer through Highfield as Agent.

Highlights include a Fed Biz filly out of the Bold Executive mare, Trail of Letters ($74,414), a half-sister to stakes winner, Mr. Online ($551,005). This dam is a proven producer with 3 winners including Lost in Rome ($333,165);

A second highlight may be found in the Counterforce gelding on offer out of the Katowice mare, Chilli Chines. Counterforce was a stakes winner of $323,708 with first foals that are 3 year olds of 2023. His record as a sire already includes multiple stakes winners such as Loveaboveandbeyond ($61,257) and progeny earnings of over $230,000. Chilli Chines is a proven broodmare with a record of 7 winners from 8 foals to race including the stakes winner, Herbie D. ($377,214).


Blair Huston

A yearling filly by the Distorted Humor son, It’s No Joke, is available in the Huston consignment. This sire has progeny with 72 winners and over $6.2 Million in earnings including the G2 winner, Bear No Joke ($607,501), Mallard’s Bro ($344,232) and Mr. Prankster ($306,468). The dam is the Posse daughter, Barefootin, a half-sister to Proper Gamble ($374,922) and the dam of 2 winners including the stakes placed Virtual Silver and Sheltowee’s Posse ($90,278).


Sandy Irwin

The Irwin consignment has a filly by It’s a Danzig out of the Street Hero mare, White Chai. It’s a Danzig is a son of leading sire Danzig, sire of 202 stakes winners and 10 champions including Chief’s Crown ($2.19 Million) and Dayjur ($750,770).


KRT Stables Inc.

Three Fed Biz yearlings are available in the KRT Stables Inc. consignment out of three proven race mares. An exciting opportunity is offered here to purchase Miss Bizzy, the first foal out of the Rosberg mare, Anstrum ($205,482). Anstrum had 4 wins at 3 and 4 and was the Alberta champion three year old filly with wins in the John Patrick, the Sonoma and the R.K. Red Smith Handicaps. A second filly, My Mum’s Mud, is offered out of the Mud Route mare, My Name’s Mud ($103,736). This mare has produced 2 winners from 2 foals, including Mudinator ($66,681), winner of the 2022 Alberta Premier’s Futurity and stakes placed in the black type Birdcatcher Stakes and the Alberta Sire Stakes Derby.

A colt, Habadabadoo, is also available out of the Cause to Believe stakes winning mare, Habida ($147,053) hose wins include the Freedom of the City Stakes. The first foal for Habida is a 3 year old this season. 


Les Marks

A Schramsberg filly and a Fed Biz filly are offered by the Les Marks consignment. The first foal for the stakes winning Skimming mare, Dawselina ($102,975) is available. Dawselina was a winner of the black type British Columbia Cup Dogwood Handicap. The Schramsberg filly is out of the Distinctive Pro mare, Devil’s Last Dance ($176,077). This dam has produced 2 foals to race including Jamaican Me Mad and Wilko’s Last Dance ($27,401).


C.W. Matier

An O’Prado Again gelding and a Tapwrit gelding are on offer in this consignment in addition to the only Instilled Regard filly in the catalogue.

The stakes winning sire, O’Prado Again ($187,406) has sired 12 winners with progeny earnings of over half a million dollars including Ghostly Who ($190,159) and I Am Ready Again ($105,745). The O’Prado Again gelding is out of the stakes winning mare Holiday Maker ($152,992); a half-sister to the stakes winner, Adore ($500,924) and producer of the stakes placed, Spot on Dude ($45,108). 
The multiple graded stakes winning sire, Instilled Regard ($983,240) has first foals that are yearlings of 2023. The Instilled Regard filly is out of a Union Rags mare, Nuestra Union, whose first foal is a 2 year old of 2023. Tapwrit is a classic winner of over $1.36 Million and his first foals are 3 year olds of 2023. His progeny already include 32 winners and over $1.54 Million in earnings including Victory Formation ($307,485) and Taylors Tap ($105,850).


Moonshine Meadow Ranch

An exciting opportunity to purchase a filly by Sungold out of the Johannesburg mare, A E Phi Sensation is available in the Moonshine Meadow Ranch sale consignment. The A. P. Indy son, Sungold, has proven himself as a sire with progeny that include 12 stakes winners and 55 winners of 160 races and progeny earnings of over $3.1 Million including the Alberta champion and multiple stakes winner, Infinite Patience ($469,947), Sunburst ($153,155), Strate Remark ($170,372) and Brass and Gold ($163,783).

A Bakken gelding and a Sungold gelding are offered through Scott Palmer Ranching Ltd. The stakes placed sire, Bakken ($223,900) has progeny that includes 44 winners of 141 races and earnings of over $1.8 Million. His winners include the multiple stakes winning runner, Floral ($124,856), Mi Reyna ($109,621) and stakes winner, Bare Back Jack ($89,486). The dam of the Bakken yearlings is the multiple stakes winning mare, Claresmiezie ($197,036); her third foal is a 3 year old of 2023 and both her 2 foals to race are winners including Sir MIezie ($34,069) who placed third in the Canadian Juvenile Stakes. 
The Sungold gelding is out of the stakes placed Western Fame mare, Chandlers Heart ($166,660). This dam has produced 3 winners from foals to race including the stakes placed runner, Shotthrutheheart $52,178).


Running Fawcett Thoroughbreds Ltd.

The only Brody’s Cause yearling in the catalogue is in this consignment. The Giant’s Causeway son is a stakes winner of $1.17 Million and has sired 84 winners of 174 races and progeny earnings of $5.69 Million. Brody’s Cause winners include Kalypso ($607,638) and Sittin On Go ($231,093). The dam of this gelding is the More Than Ready daughter, She’sadowntowngirl who has produced 3 foals including Uptown Social, a winner at 3 ($13,936).


Running Fawcett Thoroughbreds Ltd., Agent

2 fillies are on offer through Running Fawcett Thoroughbreds as Agent; a Singing Saint yearling and a Thousand Words yearling.

He has sired 32 winners of 44 races and his progeny earnings are over $1.74 Million including Grand Isle ($120,480). This is the first foal for the dam of this filly, the Super Saver daughter, Scarlet Fire. The Thousand Words ($327,500) gelding is from the first crop for this son of leading sire, Pioneer of the Nile, as his first foals are just yearlings in 2023. The dam of the Thousand Words yearling is a City Zip daughter, Special City ($33,468) who has produced 3 foals including Sharpened ($7,660).


Stolz Thoroughbreds

Available in the Stolz Thoroughbreds consignment are a Tour de Force filly and a Medallist colt. 
Tour de Force has first foals that are yearlings of 2023. Tour de Force is a grades stakes placed runner by leading sire, champion and only two time Breeders’ Cup Classic winner, Tiznow. Tour de Force is out of multiple G1 winner and G1 producer, the Seeking the Gold mare, Dream Supreme. 
Medallist ($421,375) is a stakes winning son of Touch Gold and has sired progeny that include 9 stakes winners and 136 winners of 564 races. The total progeny earnings for Medallist are $12.86 Million and include Ibboyee ($701,822), Winning the Medal ($461,516) and Love Came to Town ($403,664). The Medallist yearling on offer is out of the Sunriver mare, Doubleblackdiamond ($98,210) who has produced 2 winners from 3 foals including Titanic Rose ($152,506).

 

Styled by Stars Ranch

Styled by Stars Ranch has one of the larger consignments in the catalogues with 7 yearlings available by a variety of quality stallions including Lent, Max Forever, Bodexpress, Misremembered, Gormley, Mor Spirit and Tapwrit.

A highlight may be the Max Forever gelding out of the Animal Kingdom mare, Jungle Rose. The stakes winning stallion, Max Forever sired 20 winners of 48 races including Alberta champion Regal Max ($225,220) and Langfuhr Max ($48,169). This mare is a proven dam having produced (with her only other foal to date) the stakes placed runner Bootiful Rose ($70,746) who placed second in the 2022 Princess Margaret Stakes, the Sturgeon River Stakes, the CTHS 2 year old Sales Stake and third in the Freedom of the City Stakes in addition to a third place this season in the black type Chariot Chaser Handicap.

The Bodexpress gelding is among the first foals on offer by the Bodemeister son, Bodexpress, as his first foals are just yearlings of 2023. Bodemeister was a sire of 35 stakes winners including Kentucky Derby winner, Always Dreaming ($2.42 Million) and American Anthem ($848,490).
The Candy Ride son, Misremembered, is the sire of a gelding on offer out of the Philanthropist mare, Neace. This is the first foal for the Big Drama mare, The Lady Chablis ($35,075), a half-sister to the stakes placed No Getting Over Me ($65,030).

Winsome Acres has a filly by the Paddy O’Prado son, Mr O’Prado, on offer. Mr O’Prado is a half-brother to graded stakes winner, Deans Kitten ($802,950). Paddy O’Prado is a stakes winning sire of 14 stakes winners including G2 winner Sleepy Eyes Todd ($2.05 Million). People’s Choice Award: Decade Five 2014 – 2023 Thundering Trails: Alberta’s Decade of Speedy Thoroughbreds The third decade opened with Taylor’s Swift’s release of ‘1989’, which went on to be one of the best-selling albums of the decade, Malaysian airline flight 370 mysteriously disappeared and racing fans voted California Chrome’s win in the 140th Kentucky Derby the top racing moment of 2014. SMART FIX ran the first race of her career at Northlands, Jimmy Fallon took over the Tonight show and a 37 year drought was ended when American Pharaoh won the Triple Crown in 2015. The CTHS Alberta sale graduate SMART FIX went on to race for seven seasons and earned the title of 2019 Champion Alberta bred and Horse of the Year.

The first year of this decade was of special note for Thoroughbreds in North America. Hollywood Park was the site of the very first Breeders’ Cup, John Henry was the first Thoroughbred to win $6 million and the 110th Kentucky Derby was won by Swale. The movie Back to the Future was released in 1985, Coca-Cola changed its secret formula and then quickly brought the 99 year old recipe back a few months later and ROAD TO PONDER was on the track at Woodbine for the beginning of a four year racing career. Mainly racing out of Alberta, this chestnut horse had lifetime earnings of $268,881.

Alberta breds Running Elsewhere Congratulations to all the connections of Alberta bred PIPER ROSE, winner of the $17,000 Race 10 at Turf Paradise on February 26th. The ten year old mare ran the one mile race in a field of eight to win for owners Bennie Woolley Jr. and Mitchell Cathey. Piper Rose was bred by Lamont Heppner and ran for six years in Alberta, winning both the 2017 Alberta Oaks and the 2020 Alberta Fall Classic Distaff Handicap.
