Due to the recently reported cases in Florida of Equine Piroplasmois (EP), Canada has asked the US Department of Agriculture (APHIS) not to endorse any export health certificates for horses travelling to Canada from Florida. EP is caused by a blood-cell parasite and was thought to have been eradicated from the U.S. in 1982. It can leave horses anemic and with a low platelet count which can lead to serious illness or even death. Canada has also asked that additional certification for horses from other states be provided for all certificates issued after September 15, 2008. The ban and additional certification are in effect until further notice. (Posted September 12, 2008)
