Press Release: Regarding Canadian Registration Fees
At their meeting in Edmonton on June 4, the CTHS National Directors voted to increase the fee to register a foal to $75.00 as of January 1, 2011. The fee for registering a foal in Canada after its first full birthday will remain the same at $200.00.
The current fee of $50.00 was introduced twenty-one years ago with the foal crop of 1989.
"Over the past twenty years, the National Office has experienced the same increase in operating expense that all businesses have. Although the staff has done its best to keep expenses in line, the small surplas maintained during the 1990s has gradually eroded as membership and registration numbers decline. The National Directors explored several possibilities to not only defray costs but to increase revenues. However, the increase in fees for registration was determined to be the most logical and straight forward method explored", explained Grant Watson, the Finance Committee Chair.
ATTENTION MEMBERS: The above increase to registration fees, effective January 1, 2011 will impact all 2010 foals not registered by that date.
REGISTRATION FEES All registration fees are subject to HST at 13%
After July 1 to December 31, 2010 -
- Within first year of foal's birth: $50.00 plus $6.50 HST = $56.50
- After full first year: $200.00 + $26.00 HST = $226.00
After January 1, 2011 (including foals of 2010):
- Within first year of foal's birth: $75.00 plus $9.75 HST = $ 84.75
- After full first year: $200.00 + $26.00 HST = $226.00

The 2010 British Columbia CTHS Yearling and Mixed Sale - September 14
$80,000 Sale topper goes to Pauline Felicella...
Ardent, long-time sale supporters Pauline and Nick Felicella continued to make their presence felt at the annual auction. Pauline Felicella made the $80,000 winning bid on Hip #93, a handsome colt by Storm Victory out of Boundless Colony that topped the 2010 CTHS yearling and mixed sale. The sale-topper was consigned by Helen Klimes and Margaret Leight and is a full brother to recent PNE Speed Handicap winner Boundless Cat and SP Surprisal.
The next highest price paid was $50,000 by respected B.C. horseman Glen Todd for a Stephanotis colt out of Ayne Z. from Mike Anderson. Stamped with Hip #89, this colt is a half-brother to champion El Sinaloense and SP Clear to Canada.
Another pillar of the industry, Swift Thoroughbreds Inc. went to 49,000 for Hip #99, a filly by Mutakddim out of stakes winner Classical Romance from the Tod Mtn. Thoroughbreds consignment. The filly is a half-sister to SP Flying Discount. Her dam is a half-sister to SW Scotman, SW Briartic Romance and SP Eternal Halo.
The CTHS Sale yesterday appears was an overwhelming success although no official numbers have been released as yet. The unofficial results are that 89 horses sold for a gross amount of $1.36 million which appears to be a substantial increase over the 2009 figures of 90 horses sold for a gross amount of $989,000. Warrant put out for Local Horse Owner -
Fails to Appear in Cochrane Provincial Court
A warrant in the public interest has been issued for a man charged with neglecting his Springbank-area horses after he failed to appear in Cochrane Provincial Court August 20, 2010.
Robert Lorne Craig, who was 50 years old when his 33 horses were seized by the Alberta SPCA last January, faces two charges under Alberta's Animal Protection Act - allowing animals to be in distress and failing to provide adequate food and care.SPCA officials allege Craig's horses showed indications of malnutrition and many were coping with medical ailments that had not been tended to. The horses were treated and the majority were sold at an auction in High River in late January.
