Edmonton Equine Veterinary Services (1998) Inc. will be entering into a business merger with West Wind Veterinary Services as of March 31, 2010. Services will continue to be offered at Edmonton Equine Veterinary Services (1998) Inc adn West Wind Veterinary Services utnil June 30, 2010, at which time the outpatient and surgical services will be transferred to the West Wind Facility east of Sherwood Park. The blended practices will operate under thenew name of Edmonton Equine Veterinary Center. Doctors Ingram and Stewart will continue to service their clientele, as well as mentor current associates and those joining this venture. 15 New Equine Projects Launched by Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation

Fifteen new research projects to benefit the horse will be launched this year through funding from the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation. In addition, four other projects begun in 2009 will be funded in their second and concluding year, with a total allocation of $889,697 for the 19 projects. The new projects will address a wide range of problems and conditions that affect a large number of horses. Some are specific to the racehorse, including work by Dr. Sue Stover and Dr. Mont Hubbard at the University of California-Davis. They will be continuing work on validating a laboratory process for evaluating racetrack materials with the aim of maximizing safety.

Another racetrack-related project will be conducted at Canada’s University of Guelph by Dr. Jeffrey Thomason, whose team will be analyzing the effects on horses’ hooves of different degrees of racetrack banking. Horses will be trained both clockwise and counter-clockwise during the study. Dr. Thomason’s project was selected to receive the 2010 ElastikonTM Equine Research Award, which is funded in part by a donation to the foundation from the Consumer Products Division of Johnson & Johnson, manufacturer of Elastikon tape and other equine products. Super Race is Off and It's A Wise Decision - There will be no race for the ages between horse racing’s biggest stars next month in Arkansas. The camp of Rachel Alexandra, the filly who is the reigning Horse of the Year, wants no part of the undefeated mare Zenyatta for now.

Jess Jackson, Rachel Alexandra’s co-owner, announced the decision Sunday, but he has been thinking of skipping the $5 million race for weeks. The Jockey Club Announces Interactive Registration Enhancements

The Jockey Club has modified its Interactive RegistrationTM platform to expand digital photo processing capacity and to create a “Registration Center” through which registered customers can view and resolve outstanding conditions of registration.

Interactive Registration, the online service of The Jockey Club’s Registry, expedites the registration process by eliminating several manual processing steps that can affect turnaround time for issuance of Service Certificates, name tags, Certificates of Foal Registration and other documents.

Available at no charge at registry.jockeyclub.com, Interactive Registration has processed more than 1 million transactions since its launch in 1996. (Posted March 3, 2010)


 

  

As reported on www.thehorses.com - Northlands Park will host an 85 - day thoroughbred meet starting Friday May 2010. The race meet will end October  11 - Thanksgiving Day. The 2010 schedule calls for one break from August 29 to September 5 for the chuckwagon derby. The met will follow the traditional Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday rotation of race cards. There will be five holiday cards: May 24, July 1, August 2, September 6 and October 11 - closing day.  (Updated March 2, 2010)

HBPA Announces "approximate" Purses for Northlands Park Race Meet

Mat Monaco - executive director of the Alberta HBPA - has announced an approximate purse pool for the upcoming 85 day Northlands Park thoroughbred meet.

Monaco has also informed horsemen in a statement that "thoroughbred training will commence at Northlands on April 15, 2010 (weather and/or track conditions permitting)(Updated March 2, 2010) 


The Calgary Herald reported on February 24, 2010 that the developers of the multi-million dollar racetrack and entertainment complex in Balzac are selling some of the land in order to raise money after seeking creditor protection last fall.
