The 46th Running of the Spangled Jimmy is on Saturday, July 4th. Alberta-breds Teagues Fight and Diamond Doc are part of the field of five entered in the weekend race. Diamond Doc has had three starts this meet and had two wins. His last time out was on June 13 in the Journal Handicap where he came in third. Teagues Fight last ran on May 23 in the 4 Year Olds and Up Sales Stake where he came in second. Filling out the field on Saturday's race is Test Boy, Codio and Zuri Mwana. Post time is at 3:42 p.m.

This weekend sees the 24th Running of the Ky Alta on July 11th with Ab Brewster's Cool Diablo being the only Alberta-bred in the field of six horses. On Sunday, July 12th the 30th Running of the Princess Margaret looks to be a race between Alberta-breds and Kentucky-breds. Alberta-breds Nastia, Maria Fortunata and Topasannah are entered against Kentucky-breds JaceyJay, Sheyenne Girl and Buttons N Smiles. Best of luck to all our Alberta-bred owners and breeders! An interesting article entitled, How the "Monkey Crouch" Transformed Horseracing" can be found at www.sciencemag.org . The article discusses the findings of the University of London's Royal Veterinary College and their research in regards to finding the best and safest ways for jockeys to ride. Back in 1897, American jockey Ted Sloan arrived in the U.K. and rode in a crouched position. Sloan's method of riding improved race times and now researchers are able to explain why. Thanks to the efforts of the Kelowna SPCA, B.C. Interior Horse Rescue and the Canadian Disaster Animal Response Team approximately 100 horses were evacuated from the Kelowna area due to recent forest fires. They are now working to make sure that there are enough supplies for the animals who are housed at three area farms. It is estimated that as of Sunday afternoon 150 horses were left in the evacuated area. (Posted July 20, 2009)
TOBA (Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association) has announced the breeders of the year for each state and one for Canada. These are selected by each state's Thoroughbred association and will be honored at an awards ceremony to be held September 10 at Keeneland. Congratulations to the Canadian Breeder of the Year, as selected by the National CTHS, Mr. A.B. Brewster, Cool Spring Farm. It's great to have an Alberta-bred representing Canada!
