Who We Are
Founded in 1906, the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (CTHS) was incorporated under the Animal Pedigree Act as the official registry of Thoroughbred horses in Canada.
The CTHS (Alberta Division) and its membership are a major part of the agriculture community in Alberta - our goal is to ensure a viable future for our members by providing assistance and developing programs to ensure that future.
Our mandate is to promote the purchase of Alberta Thoroughbreds, keep records, organize sales, disseminate information, compile statistics and assist our membership with registration.
The Objectives and Purposes of the CTHS are:
- To provide a system of registration of Thoroughbred horses and the keeping of their pedigree in accordance with the Animal Pedigree Act.
- To determine the requirements for registration of horses as Thoroughbreds;
- To assist and afford means for the promotion of the interests of those engaged in the breeding of Thoroughbred horses; to diffuse information among its Members and other interested parties;
- To promote,encourage, develop and assist in Thoroughbred horse exhibitions, agriculture exhibitions and fairs and Thoroughbred horse racing; to offer, grant and contribute funds for developing and promoting breed improvement programs for Thoroughbred horses; and to provide services to the breeders of Thoroughbred horses;
- To sponsor, assist and conduct sales of Thoroughbreds.
- To maintain an efficient supervision of breeders of Thoroughbreds; to prevent, detect and punish fraud and other unbusiness-like conduct on the part of Thoroughbred horse breeders and, without limiting the generality of teh foregoing, to take all possible action to ensure the accuracy of the registration of Thoroughbreds;
- To compile statistics applicable to the industry and furnish information in regard thereto to interested parties;
- To practice, encourage and promote responsible equine ownership through the proper health, care and welfare of Thoroughbreds that meet federal and provincial legislation regarding proper care and treatment of animals.

The CTHS aims to ensure a viable future for its members by providing assistance and representation within the Thoroughbred Breeding Industry.
Becoming a member of the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society brings with it the many programs offered to Alberta breds as well as a one-year subscription to the Canadian Thoroughbred, sales catalogues and other information.
Benefits of registering foals as Canadian-Breds will allow for entry into restricted stakes, breeders & owners supplements, stallion bonuses, Fall Classic eligibility and numerous other programs.
- The CTHS serves as a voice for its members in the industry. As key issues and problems of the industry are discussed, the CTHS representatives carry the voice of breeders to those meeting rooms where decisions are made.
- The CTHS co-hosts the Annual Awards Night which brings together breeders from all across Canada.
- The CTHS continues to hold sales in Alberta to serve as a means for our membership to increase their cash benefits from breeding.
- The CTHS, through Horse Racing Alberta's Thoroughbred Breed Improvement Program, distributes funds to various programs.
- The CTHS supports many facets of the Thoroughbred Industry through sponsorship of various organizations including the Horse Racing Hall of Fame, Spruce Meadows Masters, The Owners & Breeders Conference, Alberta colleges and many others.
