The President's Stakes race is set to take place this Saturday June 6th at Northlands Park in Edmonton. Three Alberta-bred runners are part of the field of nine horses entered - Cool Diablo, Mr. Shadar and Rumble Ruckus. Cool Diablo was bred by Ab Brewster and is by Young Devil out of Devil's Favour by Devil on Ice. This chestnut three year gelding won the 2008 Alberta Premier's Futurity by eight lengths. The President's Stakes will be his first start of 2009. Mr. Shadar is a dark bay three year old by Alydeed out of Drummers Roll by Follow the Drum. He has won his first and only start of the 2009 season in an allowance race over six furlongs. Rumble Ruckus is a chestnut gelding by Highland Ruckus out of Special Effort by Torquelle. He was bred by Bill and Kathy Ramage of Alberta. He had a successful season in 2008 in Lethbridge but has not started in 2009.

There will be $26,000 added money for Alberta-breds in the President's Stakes if one of the three Alberta horses wins the race. If an Alberta-bred wins, there will be an additional $15,600 paid on top of the regular purse money; an Alberta-bred finishing second will earn an additional $6,500 while an Alberta-bred in third spot would earn an additional $3,900. Congratulations to Alberta Breeder Calmar Stables and Ranch! Air Wolf, graduate of the 2007 Alberta Summer Yearling Sale, placed first at Woodbine on Wednesday, June 3. Air Wolf, sired by Rosetti, had five starts last year with two wins and one place for earnings of $20,562.00. (Posted June 4, 2009)


Update on the President's Stakes race that took place on Saturday, June 6. No Alberta-bred placed in the top three, leaving more added Alberta-bred money in the pot for 2010. The winner was Robo Willie, a Kentucky-bred owned and bred by Stan Ryan and trained by Greg Tracy. (Updated June 9, 2009)


Alberta-bred Tricky Temper won the Mount Royal Handicap for Three Year Old Fillies at Northlands on Sunday, June 7. Ridden by Desmond Bryan, the dark bay filly took the lead in the second turn and held it to the finish line to win over Dandy Dora. Tricky Temper is owned and bred by Bar None Ranches of Dewinton, Alberta. Bar None Ranches took home $30,000 in purse money plus $30,870 in Alberta bred bonuses for a total of $60,870. Tricky Temper is by the Bar None Ranches stallion Tempered Appeal. (Posted June 9, 2009).  


Alberta-bred Cryptonite Kid is now standing at lifetime earnings of $215,313 after winning his only 2009 start so far. He won $37,680 in a $68,000 Allowance race at Woodbine on May 23, 2009. The dark bay four year old was bred by Paul Punnopsri and Philip Teinowitz in Alberta in 2005 and was stakes placed as a year old, earning $111,957 in his first year racing. Cryptonite Kid is by Cryptoclearance out of Cozy Up Doc by Explosive Red.

Alberta-bred mare Victory Romance won a $20,000 Allowance race at Northlands on June 21. The four year old is back in Alberta racing after campaigning at Woodbine during the 2008 season. Victory Romance has earned over $340,000 US in her career and has placed 1st and 3rd in her three starts to date in the 2009 season. She was bred by Donver Stables and is still owned by Donver Stables. She is trained by Floyd Arthur. Victory Romance is by Slew City Slew out of Moonbeam Dancing by Dance Brightly.  (Posted June 24, 2009)
There were two Alberta based stables who had horses running at Woodbine on Queen's Plate day - June 21st, 2009. Donver Stable owned the winner of the first race of the day - the $79,500 Allowance Race for three year old and up fillies and mares. Their three year old mare, Careless Jewel, took an early lead to stay in front and capture the race over Bear's Lightning, owned by Bear Stables of Alberta. Careless Jewel is a gray filly by Tapit out of Sweet and Careless by Hennessy. Donver Stable also owns Takiddm, winner of the second race on the day for two year olds with a purse of $67,000. Takiddm is a chestnut colt by Mutakddim out of First Corsage by Grindstaone. Two Alberta based stallions, Kissin Kris and Cape Canaveral, were represented in the $ 1,000,000 Queen's Plate. Bucephalus, owned by Knob Hill Stable, is a three year old colt by Cape Canaveral who stands at Highfield Farms in Okotoks, Alberta. Keino West, owned by Track West Racing Inc. also ran in the Queen's Plate and is by Kissin Kris of Esquirol Farms, Alberta. (Updated June 24, 2009)
Alberta-bred Tricky Temper placed second in the $50,000 Chariot Chaser Handicap on June 27 at Northlands. The three year old filly by Bar None Ranches' Tempered Appeal is owned by her breeder, Bar None Ranches, of DeWinton, Alberta. She is trained by Kelly Grieves. (Updated June 27, 2009)

Cool Diablo won a $32,000 Allowance race at Northlands on June 28. This Alberta-bred three year old gelding by Young Devil out of Devil's Favour was bred by Ab Brewster who still owns him today. Cool Diablo is trained by Cody Anderson and was ridden by Real Simard. (Updated June 27, 2009)
