Sadly, the stallion Dr. Adagio was humanely euthanized last week due to complications from laminitis. Dr. Adagio stood stud at Peaceful Valley Stables in Alberta and was 21 years old. Dr. Adagio was a Kentucky-bred horse by Cure the Blues out of Istria by Silly Season. HIs progeny includes 3 black type winners and 6 black type placers and he has five 2 year olds and 1 yearling who have yet to reach their potential. A well known Alberta race horse by Dr. Adagio is Diamond Doc out of Brass to Diamonds. Diamond Doc recently won the 2009 Sales Stakes at Northlands and currently has $100,078 in earnings. Saturday, June 27th was the 24th Running of the Chariot Chaser. Three Alberta-breds; Tricky Temper, Jeffiner and Bodgits Lady were part of the field of eight in the six and one half furlongs race. Tricky Temper was the winner of the Mount Royal Stakes held on June 7th and ran against Dandy Dora and Belong Again who placed second and third in that race. The 46th Running of the Spangled Jimmy is on Saturday, July 4th. Alberta-breds Teagues Fight and Diamond Doc are part of the field of five entered in the weekend race. Diamond Doc has had three starts this meet and had two wins. His last time out was on June 13 in the Journal Handicap where he came in third. Teagues Fight last ran on May 23 in the 4 Year Olds and Up Sales Stake where he came in second. Filling out the field on Saturday's race is Test Boy, Codio and Zuri Mwana. Post time is at 3:42 p.m. Update - Alberta bred Diamond Doc placed third in the Spangled Jimmy Handicap with Test Boy in second spot and Zuri Mwana winning the race. (Updated July 7, 2009)

Alberta race fans will remember the highly successful race mare, Raylene, who ran mainly in Alberta from 2002 through 2005. Owned by Calmar Stables and Ranch, Raylene won numerous stakes races including the Bird of Pay, Princess Margaret S., Freedom of the City S., British Columbia Breeders' Cup, Canadian Derby, Mount Royal Handicap, Lilac Handicap, Ken Pearson Handicap, Duchess of York Stakes, City of Edmonton Distaff Handicap, Matron Breeders Handicap. Raylene retired from the racetrack after her 2005 season with career earnings of $776,361. She was purchased as a $10,000 yearling from the 2001 Keeneland September sale. The Tabasco cat filly was bred to Fusaichi Pegasus for a 2007 foal - this foal is the 2 year old named Jeppino who race followers may have noticed in the first race on the card at Northlands on June 26. Jeppino placed second in the Maiden race for two year old fillies which was her second career start to date. She is owned by Calmar Stables and Ranch and trained by Rodney Haynes. Race fans may want to keep an eye on this filly with her outstanding bloodlines over the next year or two. Raylene also has a 2008 filly by A.P. Indy who will be a horse to watch for next year. FATAL BULLET WINS FIRST START FOR 2009 - The 2008 Canadian Horse of the Year, Fatal Bullet won the $150,000 Bold Venture Stakes race at Woodbine today, making his first start since finishing 2nd in the Breeeders Cup Sprint last October. This is the 2nd consecutive win in the Bold Venture Stakes for Fatal Bullet, having won the race in 2008. Under his regular rider Eurico DaSilva, Fatal Bullet coasted to the lead, setting fractions of :22.58, :44.55, 1:08.37 and finishing in 1:14.9. Looking forward, the next start for Fatal Bullet will be in the Gr.1 Bing Crosby Stakes going 6 furlongs on the sinthetic surface at DelMar on Saturday, August 8th.
