Intriguing Start to 2010 for Highfield Stock Farm

A promising win by a three-year-old runner - with a sentimental name - has started the year on the right foot for Alberta's Highfield Stock Farm.

Distorted Dave closed almost five lengths in the stretch to win a maiden allowance on Saturday at Santa Anita. Sent off at 10-1, the son of Distorted Humor covered the 5.5 furlongs in 1:03.39. "We don't think he's a five and a half furlong horse," said Adrian Munro of Highfield Stock Farm. "We think he's a two-turn horse." Highfield owns the majority of the chestnut colt, with Stephen Johnson having a share. Trained by John Sadler, Distorted Dave will likely post a workout in the next week, according to Munro. "He'll likely come back in an allowance," continued Munro.

Needless to say it was an encouraging first-ever start for a youngster with an interesting past. "We bred him - we owned the mare," said Munro. "We bought the mare in foal for $975,000." When Distorted Dave reached the auction ring, his reserve bid was $300,000. Bidding stopped at $160,000 - meaning he was bought back. With the colt named after Dave Munro - Adrian's father - it's fitting that Highfield still has him. Saturday's victory was worth $26,400 US.
