Alberta Stallion Changes for 2011 Season (Updated March 22, 2011)
The stallion Captain Bodgit has been moved from Highfield Stock Farm in Okotoks, Alberta to North Dakota to stand the 2011 season. Captain Bodgit is by Saint Ballado out of Answering Echo by Greek Answer. He was the #1 Leading Sire in Alberta for individual winners in 2006 and his chief earner is Caliente Roja who has earnings of $41, 797. Captain Bodgit is the sire of progeny with over $9.5 million in earnings. Captain Bodgit produced the local Alberta runners CAPTAIN'S ECHO, BODGIT'S LADY and JAZZY SONG from his first Alberta crop. Highfield has also announced that leading stallion Cape Canaveral, sire of 17 stakes winners to date, with progeny earnings over $12.5 million, will have his 2011 stud fee reduced from $5,000 to $4,500.
Deputy Country has moved from Esquirol Farms and Paddockhurst Stables in Alberta to stand at Thunderbird Horse Center in Brandon, Manitoba. Deputy Country was Champion Older Horse in Alberta in 2004 and 2005 and is by Silver Deputy out of Silver Valley by Deputy Minister.
Gold Legend by Seattle Slew out of Mr. Prospector's Champion Sprinter Gold Beauty passed away in April 2010 at the age of twenty years at Esquirol Farms in Ryley, Alberta. Esquirol Farms will be standing Kissin Kris and Cobra King for the 2011 season in addition to a new stallion to Alberta, Formal Gold.
Formal Gold is a Grade I winner of $1.5 million and a leading sire. He most recently stood stud at Rancho San Miguel, a premier California breeding farm. This grandson of Mr. Prospector is by Black Tie Affair out of Ingoldsby by Screen King. Formal Gold has sired progeny with global earnings of nearly $14,000,000 and has 19 stakes winners including Graded winners Adore the Gold (G2, $239,573) Trickle of Gold (G3, $467,709), Semaphore Man (G3,$564,104), Miss Matched (G3, $339,799) and Transduction Gold ($441,591).
It is with great regret that Bar None Ranches Ltd. announces the passing of Tempered Appeal. A winner of over $580,000 on the racetrack winning or placing in eight stakes races in a career that spanned five years. Tempered Appeal was humanely Euthanized after complications from a racing injury caused his down turn. Tempered Appeal has sired three crops of racing age at this time and is the sire of Tricky Temper winner of the Mount Royal Handicap. Tempered Appeal offered breeders a great outcross descending from the In Reality sire line. Tempered Appeal was 14 years old at the time of his death on the first weekend in February at Bar None Ranches in DeWinton, Alberta. Tempered Appeal was the Multiple Stakes Winner of $583,891 who won or placed in EIGHT major Stakes Races and the sire of 2009 Mount Royal Handicap winner TRICKY TEMPER. He was also the sire of undefeated 2008 ACTRA Stakes winner APACHE MAID and SP Desperate Appeal, runner-up in the Princess Margaret Stakes from his first crop. His progeny have earnings of over $500,000.
The Kris S. stallion Tiger Trap, owned by Ralph and Betty O'Bray passed away in the fall of 2010 at the age of twelve. The son of Kris S. out of Thega by Conquistador Cielo stood at O'Bray's Equine Services in Carstairs, Alberta. Tiger Trap was the recipient of the 2007 Alberta Freshman Sire award sponsored by the Thoroughbred Times.
The Bold Ruckus stallion, Rowdy Ruckus has moved from Bar 17 Stables in Alberta to Running L Ranch at Winfield, Alberta. Rowdy Ruckus entered stud in 2003 and was the sire of the top selling Alberta-bred yearling at the 2010 Alberta Thoroughbred Sale.
Three Alberta stallions finished out 2010 in the top twenty on the Bloodhorse 2010 Canadian Leading Sire List. Gilded Time, the sire of Multiple Graded Stakes Winner Old Topper, was fourth overall with progeny earnings of $2,095,860. The Mr. Prospector bred sire Cape Canaveral placed eleventh overall with progeny earnings of $1,237,706 and will stand the 2011 season at Highfield Stock Farm in Okotoks, Alberta. Formal Gold makes the top twenty list in nineteenth place with $949,897.
